Lizzie Borden (1860 - 1927) was an American woman who was tried for and acquitted of the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother.
Now, Out Of The Forest Theatre are set to take another look at the case with their aptly-titled production, Bury The Hatchet, which is scheduled to run at Vault Festival from 7 to 11 March 2018.
Artistic Director, Sasha Wilson, said:
"Initially, the Victorian flavour, the slasher horror and the fact that it was a woman taking the reins for once were what drew me to the story.
True crime is having a much needed moment in the sun, but what is fascinating to me is that this need to understand death, violence and the macabre, is suddenly mainstream.
Bury the Hatchet tries to understand why we are drawn to things that are unsettling and troubling but also attempts to redefine the construction of a traditional narrative when there are conflicting pieces of evidence and contrasting stories."
About the Company
Out Of The Forest Theatre was formed in April 2017 by Sasha Wilson, Joseph Prowen, Sam Jenkins-Shaw and Joseph Cullen as an ensemble-based theatre company that attempts to redefine the traditional narrative structure of the theatre with an eye to blending music, movement and storytelling with hopes of shining a spotlight on women, weirdos and way-begotten characters of history and our bizarre modern society.
Sasha Wilson, Joseph Prowen and David Leopold graduated from LAMDA in 2014.
Joseph Prowen won the Highly Commended Award at the Spotlight Prize that year.
Between them they have credits with The RSC, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Southwark Playhouse, Park Theatre, The Old Red Lion, Out Of Joint, Trafalgar Studios, Finborough Theatre and will travel with Bury The Hatchet to Taliesin West and Rosson House in Arizona, where the show is being performed in April/May courtesy of SouthWest Shakespeare Company, for which Sasha Wilson held the position of Assistant Artistic Director for their 2017/18 season.
Sasha Wilson's previous play Siren, co-written with Joseph Cullen and produced by Over The Limit Theatre, won the Festival Spirit Award at VAULT Festival 2017, and is in discussion for 2018 runs in both London and Phoenix, Arizona.
Andrew Borden and his wife Abby are found dead in Fall River, Massachusetts on the morning of August 4th, 1892.
Their daughter Lizzie is the main suspect.
Tried but acquitted of the crime, the story goes that she wielded the axe that killed them.
Overnight, she becomes America's original "mad, bad and dangerous to know" icon of tabloid and rumour.
Set to prairie bluegrass music, and fusing folktale, nursery rhyme and Vaudevillian horror, "Bury the Hatchet" will settle the age-old question: Did Lizzie escape the hangman's noose?
And is Andrew and Abby's blood truly on her hands?
