Grist To The Mill Productions will present two solo productions - The Unknown Soldier and Gratiano - at The Playground Theatre this coming January, starring Ross Ericson ...
The Unknown Soldier - 22 to 26 January
A sell-out show from the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe, The Unknown Soldier gets its London premiere at The Playground Theatre after touring extensively across the country and in Australia.
A thought provoking, moving, and even humorous solo piece it looks at the First World War from a new perspective through the eyes of a man who has survived the carnage but remains behind to help build the great cemeteries.
It is a story of the deep friendship that can only be found between those who fight together, of the betrayal felt by them at the end of the war, and of a world that has changed so much it has become unrecognisable.
Writer and performer Ross Ericson said ...
'I knew we had a good production but I never dreamt that we would see such critical acclaim as we have done - and to sell out at the Edinburgh Fringe, well that was a fantastic achievement for such a small company.'
Mr Ericson uses his own military experience and family stories to bring an authentic voice to this very real and personal piece, which is as gritty and moving as his play Casualties, for which he was nominated for an Off West End Award.
Gratiano - 26 January 2019
In a special one off performance to celebrate the publication of the script by Methuen Drama, Mr Ericson will also be bringing Gratiano to the London stage for the first time.
Bassanio has been murdered and, under suspicion, Gratiano is forced to revisit his Fascist past.
He was never the hero - just a minor character, the plucky comic relief - but he never thought that it was he who played the villain.
In this challenging sequel to William Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice', set in the turmoil of post war Italy, Ross Ericson reads between the lines of Shakespeare's classic tale to examine the true nature of it's characters, explore the politics of prejudice and ask just how politicians managed to manipulate a democracy and turn people against themselves.
Gratiano offers a fresh look at a familiar tale that unfortunately is more than relevant to today.
