Synopsis

When Thomas Edison invented the sound recording machine he thought it might have some possible business applications but that its real potential was in reaching out to capture the voices of the dead.

Enrico Marconi believed that in the right conditions his invention of the wireless receiver would be able to pick up the whole of recorded history.

Ladies, gentlemen, children and guests from the other side, some of this is real and some of this is true.

Tonight for your pleasure we investigate the nature of the Electronic Voice Phenomena: the transmission from beyond.

Perhaps the next message will be for you?

Tracing an esoteric history of recorded sound across the twentieth century and into the digital afterlife, this multimedia performance unpicks our need to believe, our need to reach out and the persistence of connection.

Devised by MA Theatre Lab 2018, with the direction of Peader Kirk.
