The Bevin Boys is his second play.

Synopsis

It is 1943 and coal is central to the war effort.

With so many Welsh miners in the armed forces there is a serious labour shortage and coal production slumped to dangerously low levels.

Ernest Bevin, the wartime Minister of Labour and National Service, devised a scheme whereby a ballot took place to put a proportion of conscripted men into the collieries rather than the armed services.

These 'ballotees became known as the 'Bevin Boys' and their story has been largely untold.

In this play, two young English teenagers are thrown into unwelcomed circumstances, and have to survive the tough and hostile environment of a Welsh coal mine which some called the "underground front".

Jim: rough and ready and wants a combative role in the armed forces.

Billy: who is more studious is content to serve his country as he is told.

They share their beliefs and fears, and ultimately discover that carrying out non-combative work requires a different kind of bravery to that of front-line soldiering.
