Synopsis

Through the eight years of mourning not a breeze shall enter this house.

Consider the doors and windows as sealed with bricks.

In the heat of southern Spain, domineering matriarch Bernarda Alba wields inexorable power over her five daughters, imposing an eight-year period of mourning upon the household that threatens to suffocate the family - but fuels the daughters' appetite for defiance.

When the eldest daughter, Angustias, is offered a way out in the shape of marriage to the most eligible bachelor in the village, the jealousy and bitterness of her sisters erupt in a desperate struggle for freedom and autonomy.
