Background

Reviews from 2018's monolog

'funny, poetic and heartbreaking' ---- 4**** The Stage

'And this well-rounded, thoughtful programme not only reveals that the art of the single voice is still alive and kicking, it clearly shows the considerable skills among the Chickenshed fraternity. On my visit, the bubbly Ms Beacock was the energetic and capable young actor in the spotlight, telling us with surprising frankness of some of the events along the life-line of the playwright, Diane Samuels.' --- 4**** ActDrop

Synopsis

A dazzling array of voices and perspectives combine to form monolog 2, a new selection of fresh writing from within the Chickenshed community.

Selected from a huge number of submissions, these pieces shine a light on individual stories and experiences - subjects of the monologues are hugely varied: a dystopian view of social media over-sharing taken to extremes; youth protest and activism;

disability and artistic expression;

a poetic and abstract reflection of what it might mean to bring a new life into the world;

how it feels to live life on the margins, with only the most fragile of safety nets;

life as a second generation immigrant in 21st century Britain; and

the candid and honest experience of spending three years in prison.

(There will be additional pieces popping up across the run.)

Performed with minimal staging, and in an intimate space, monolog 2 will allow the simple and unique power of the written and spoken word to reveal some comic and tragic truths about living.
