Background

Ödön von Horváth's inter-war play contrasts the sentimental backdrop of a Johann Strauss waltz, and the Vienna Woods that give the tune its name, with the oncoming tide of political and social upheaval.

Born in Hungary in 1901 and dying in Paris at the age of just 36, Ödön von Horváth became one of the first anti-fascist writers living and working in Germany.

German director Caroline Steinbeis is currently associate director at Sheffield Theatres.

Recent credits include Rutherford and Son and Love and Information (Sheffield Theatres), The Crucible (Royal Exchange), We Want You To Watch (National Theatre) and The Broken Heart (Globe Theatre)

Synopsis

Tales from the Vienna Woods charts the systemic destruction of a young woman against the picture postcard setting of an idyllic Austria lurching towards fascism.

Caroline Steinbeis's new version draws darkly comic and razor sharp parallels to our current shifting political landscape.
