Going Outside by Leon Fleming
London theatre news: Tuesday 23 February 2021
LGBTQ+ - Online
A short play by writer Leon Fleming delves into the issue of revealing who you are when you're in the public eye - part of Bradford's LGBTQ+ History Month programme.
As part of Bradford's LGBTQ+ History Month programme, Leon Fleming's short play Going Outside is being broadcast live across the internet from TheMill.TV's new studios this Friday evening at 7pm.
Tickets for the production are 'Pay As You Feel' and are available here.
Leon Fleming said ...
"I'm so excited that this play is being produced as part of Bradford's LGBTQ+ History Month immense programme of events.
I'm really proud of the work the team have done to make this happen, and I can't wait to see it.
This is the first piece of mine to be broadcast live, so it's a real career milestone."
TheMill.TV's Jim Mitcham added ...
"We are absolutely thrilled to be involved with this flagship project for Bradford's LGBTQ+ History Month which marks our first foray into live online theatre from our newly built broadcast studio in the heart of the city.
The team behind this production represent some of the finest talent in the region, and the story is one that resonates powerfully."
TheMill.TV is a large studio space and the small team present in the studio at rehearsals and broadcast are taking Covid-19 safety very seriously with mask usage, social distancing, sanitisation of hands and equipment, and Lateral Flow Testing.
Three students from Bradford University's Film and Television Production BA (Hons) course - Bradford is UNESCO's first City of Film - will be working with the production and getting hands-on experience of live broadcast.
Director, Katie Turner-Halliday from Heifer Productions said ...
"Working on Going Outside has provoked deep and interesting conversations throughout the rehearsal process.
Fleming's writing has allowed us to scratch the surface of what it is to be queer in the modern world - a world which is rapidly changing but one in which the LGBTQ+ community still faces unjustifiable abuse.
According to Stonewall, one in eight 18-24 year olds who identify as LGBTQ+ have attempted suicide.
If we lived in a more accepting world, I wonder how much this would change?
Going Outside asks important questions, let's keep the conversation going."
Going Outside is supported by Bradford LGBTQ+ charity Equity Partnership as part of a LGBTQ+ specific mental health project.
