TUESDAY 28 JULY - SPOTLIGHT ON: DEAFINITELY THEATRE

Deafinitely Theatre are the first deaf launched and deaf led professional theatre company in the UK producing bilingual theatre in British Sign Language and Spoken English.

Their vision is to help create a word where theatre is truly accessible for all and deaf people are a valued part of the national theatre landscape.

Their mission is to produce high-quality bilingual theatre for deaf and hearing audiences of all ages and backgrounds, combining the visual storytelling of British Sign Language and the immediacy of the spoken word.

Paula founded Deafinitely Theatre back in 2002, alongside Steven Webb and Kate Furby, after becoming frustrated with the barriers deaf actors and directors faced in mainstream media.

Their previous work includes: Love's Labour's Lost (the first ever British Sign Language production of Shakespeare), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare's Globe Theatre); Grounded (Park Theatre); Contractions (New Diorama Theatre, Winner of Best Production at the 2018 Off West End Awards) and 4.48 Psychosis (Old Diorama Theatre).

This session will be conducted in British Sign Language with a voiceover in Spoken English provided by a British Sign Language Interpreter.

Thursday 30 JULY - VOICE COACHING

with Leon Trayman

Leon has been teaching voice and singing lessons for more than ten years.

Initially trained as a musician, he is an accomplished pianist, saxophonist and clarinetist as well as a highly experienced vocalist.

He went on to train as an actor at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and continues to work as an Actor, Musician, Director and Voice Coach in professional Theatre, TV, Film and Radio.

Leon has worked as a singing teacher at the world famous Brit School and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

He also lectures in Voice at The University of Northampton and has been a visiting tutor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Rose Bruford College, Drama Studio London and many other vocational and University training programmes across the UK and Europe.

Due to the diversity of Leon's training and experience, he approaches his teaching and performance from musical, theatrical, directorial and technical voice perspectives.

This is all underpinned by the Estill Model, which provides a physiological basis on which to build a reliable, effective, responsive and expert voice for all his clients, irrespective of age or previous experience.

Leon will be breaking down his process as a Voice Coach and how he's been working with his clients during lockdown, focusing on the use of text (moving from page to stage) and personal/artistic development.
