Casting is announced for hit Canadian play Hockey Mom Hockey Dad which will get its European premiere at the Finbourough Theatre.

Award-winning writer Michael Melski's thought-provoking play breaks through the ice to explore loneliness and love in small town North America.

Presented by Proud Haddock in association with Neil McPherson for the Finborough Theatre, the show will run from Tuesday 31 March to Saturday 25 April with press night scheduled for 2 April.

Known for his recurring role as Jim Strange on ITV's Endeavour, Sean Rigby (Gunpowder, BBC; Pomona, Orange Tree Theatre/National Theatre; The Rubenstein Kiss, Southwark Playhouse) plays competitive hockey dad Teddy.

Joining him as Donna is RSC regular Kristin Atherton (Waterloo Road, BBC; Julius Caesar, Royal Shakespeare Company; Katie Johnstone, Orange Tree Theatre).

Two lonely single parents meet at their sons' minor league ice hockey game.

Sitting together over the course of the season, they grow close until an explosive event forces their romance onto thin ice and makes them realise that passion and violence aren't limited to the rink.

Director Jimmy Walters commented ...

"We're thrilled to be giving this play its first European outing.

It is a universal story about competitive sport, trust in a relationship and what it means to be a good parent.

These characters are beautifully written by Michael Melski and I'm excited for audiences to see the best and worst of themselves reflected in this honest, funny, and at times dangerous love story."

Synopsis

“I know it probably sounds like I'm hard on Troy.

He gives up too easy.

He shouldn't give up so easy.

He's a lot like his mother that way."

Love in the bleachers. Blood on the ice.

The usual small town affair.

Teddy and Donner are two lonely working-class single parents who meet at their children's minor league ice-hockey match.

Teddy is competitive, over-dominating and believes that winning is everything, while Donner is just happy that her son is in the team enjoying himself.

As they sit next to each other by the rink over the course of the season, they grow ever closer, only to find the best and worst of themselves reflected in the game …

Love, violence and sport collide in this tender, uproarious, and sometimes disturbing story about competitive obsession and what it means to be a (single) parent.
