Synopsis

In a country devastated by war, Macbeth is a war hero. Returning home victorious, he encounters three strange women and their prophecies pitch him into an uncontrollable spiral of bloody events - to the apex of power and to the depths of darkness.

Shakespeare's tragedy of ambition and guilt has long fascinated audiences with its themes of murder and paranoia.

First performed in 1606, it dramatises the physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake.
