Background


Clarice Cliff, the famous and much-collected painter of 1930’s pottery, was the inspiration for this play. The author, Peter Whelan, who died last year, had strong connections with the ceramic industry as he was brought up in Staffordshire and his father was a lithographic artist in the Potteries.

Synopsis


Set in a North Staffordshire traditional pottery, The Bright and Bold Design tells the story of Jessie Frost, a talented pottery painter. A new art director, Jim Rhys, arrives and takes a special interest in Jessie. His radical views on politics and art bring him into conflict with the small community he has joined and his ambitions for Jessie are not always met with enthusiasm.
